Anyone with hardly any real friends risks far more than a few lonely evenings. Studies show that social isolation weakens the immune system, accelerates cognitive decline and slows recovery from illness. The insidious part is that the body may react long before we even feel lonely.
When the body raises the alarm before we notice
Many people associate loneliness with a mood: feeling empty, sad or perhaps slightly adrift. Medical research paints a different picture. To the body, prolonged social isolation can resemble a genuine threat.
Researchers at UCLA analysed blood samples from people who had had very few close social connections over a long period. They identified pronounced activation of genes responsible for inflammatory responses. Put simply, these participants’ bodies behaved as though they were under continual attack, resulting in chronic inflammation.

One of the lead researchers described these people’s immune systems as “out of balance”. This does not merely mean catching infections more easily. It also means the body can slip into a constant state of alert that, over time, causes illness.

Social isolation does not only affect the immune system. The brain also pays a price. A review of twelve long-term studies in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience reached a clear conclusion: people with few social contacts experience faster cognitive decline.
The researchers found a strong association between isolation and reduced cognitive function, including difficulties with memory, attention and thinking. Crucially, the link with objective isolation was in some cases stronger than the link with subjective loneliness.
