A trip through the supermarket usually feels reassuring: products appear to have been checked, safe and properly regulated. The reality is less comfortable. Imports, loopholes and incomplete inspections mean that food containing substances which should no longer be consumed here repeatedly turns up in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. This no longer concerns only unusual specialities; breakfast cereals, sweets, drinks, fruit and vegetables can all be affected.
Dangerous colourings at breakfast: what is in children’s products
A recent example from a French consumer programme illustrates just how close this issue is to everyday family life. A retail expert asked a nutrition specialist to assess several products bought in a major city. The selection was entirely ordinary: brightly coloured children’s breakfast cereals, a jarred cucumber condiment and a chilled peach fizzy drink.
The assessment produced worrying findings:
- Children’s breakfast cereals: Several synthetic colourings, including vivid red, yellow and blue, which have been linked to hyperactivity and concentration difficulties in children.
- Cucumber product: Contained aluminium sulphate (E520) as a stabiliser – a substance that can place strain on the kidneys and nervous system.
- Peach lemonade: Included a colouring classified as probably carcinogenic. Just two or three cans a day are enough to exceed the limit regarded as safe.

Products aimed at children are particularly concerning. Children weigh less, their metabolism works differently, and they often eat the same products every day. Potentially harmful substances can therefore build up quickly without parents noticing.
The E171 case: banned in Europe, freely sold from the US
One of the best-known problematic substances is titanium dioxide, often listed as E171 in ingredients lists. This white colouring gave sweets, biscuit icing, sugar-coated chocolates and even toothpaste a brilliant white, visually “perfect” appearance.
Following several studies indicating a possible cancer risk, the EU removed E171 entirely from the list of permitted food ingredients. Since 2020, its use in food has officially been prohibited in Europe.
Yet E171 still reaches shop shelves through indirect routes. Titanium dioxide remains authorised in the United States. Imported sweets, breakfast cereals and baked goods from North America may therefore still contain the colouring. If goods formally meet import rules or do not attract attention, they can end up in specialist shops and even major supermarkets.
Consumer protection groups call this a “regulatory gap”: a substance may be prohibited locally but can, in practice, return through imported processed foods.
Pesticides in fruit and vegetables: banned yet still in the basket
The issue is not confined to additives. A television programme focused on environmental issues had samples of fruit and vegetables from large retail chains tested. Imported produce, particularly from Asia and South America, was the main focus.
The laboratory results appeared to be a throwback to an earlier era:
- Pomelos from China: Two substances classified as harmful to reproduction were detected.
- Grapes from Peru: Residues of several pesticides were found, including one product considered a contributing factor in declining bee and insect populations.
- Other products: Tea, coffee and other imported goods showed traces of substances that may no longer be applied to fields in Europe.
Many of these active substances have disappeared from the EU market because of long-term risks, such as potential effects on hormones, fertility or the nervous system. Elsewhere, they are still sprayed to maintain yields and control pests.

How do banned products get through at all?
The EU is a single market, and that creates a difficulty. Goods can arrive in one member state and then move on to other countries with almost no restriction. If certain checks are applied only at the first port of entry, keeping track of every subsequent delivery becomes far more difficult.
According to French authorities, more than one million non-compliant products have been imported illegally since 2021. In one uncovered case, a wholesaler in the Paris region stored 17 tonnes of goods that breached the applicable rules, ranging from incorrectly labelled foods to products containing prohibited ingredients.
Figures such as these suggest that detected cases may represent only the tip of the iceberg. Many batches are likely to have been eaten long before anyone takes samples.
What consumers can do in practice
No one can carry out laboratory tests independently during every shop. However, a few everyday approaches can substantially reduce the risk.
Check origin and avoid import traps
- Choose regional and domestic products where possible: German-made products or goods with clearly stated EU origin reduce the risk of unusual pesticides or additives prohibited in Europe.
- Be cautious with low-cost imports: Extremely cheap sweets, snacks and drinks from overseas may be tempting, but more often contain questionable ingredients.
- Question loose products: At markets or food stalls, it is worth asking about origin and supplier, especially for fruit, vegetables and herbs.
Read ingredients – even when it is tedious
The ingredients list remains the most useful tool. Regular shoppers gradually learn to recognise typical warning signs.

Their assessment is not a replacement for medical advice, but it saves time and reliably filters out many problematic products.
Extra caution for children, pregnant women and frequent consumers
Many limits are based on an average adult. Children and lighter adults fall well below that weight, yet absorb proportionally more substances when consuming the same amount.
Someone who drinks the same fizzy drink every day, regularly eats brightly coloured sweets and also consumes a great deal of imported fruit will reach ranges that authorities describe as “critical” more quickly. This is especially relevant to children with low body weight and to pregnant women.
Doctors therefore often offer pragmatic advice:
- Treat vividly coloured sweets and drinks as occasional items rather than everyday choices.
- Try new imported brands in small quantities at first and watch for reactions.
- Eat a varied diet instead of relying repeatedly on the same processed foods.
Why this issue will matter even more in the long term
As online retail expands and new import routes continue to emerge, supermarket shelves offer more variety – and the likelihood that problems are discovered only late increases too. At the same time, the volume of research on the long-term effects of additives, nanoparticles and pesticide cocktails is growing.
A single substance may be regarded as “acceptable” below a specified limit. The more significant question is the so-called “mix effect”: several chemicals may act together even when each individual one sits just below its limit. Research is still working to understand these combinations more clearly, and much remains unknown.
In everyday terms, the fewer highly processed products that go into the shopping basket, the lower the uncontrollable mixture of colourings, stabilisers, pesticides and solvents. Choosing fresh, unprocessed food more often and looking more carefully at everything else already reduces the risk considerably, without having to give up enjoyment and convenience completely.
