How to get there
Travelling to Athens
When travelling from South Africa to Athens, international flights require a stopover. Major South African airports, including OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and Cape Town International Airport, often offer flights to Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). Check with airlines for the most up-to-date routes, availability, and travel restrictions. You should also make sure that you hold all required travel documentation, including a valid passport and any necessary visas.
Airlines include Turkish Airlines, Egypt Air, Ethiopian Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Emirates. It may be advisable to consult a travel agent if you require a Schengen Visa.
We recommend arriving in Athens at least one day before the retreat begins. The city is well worth exploring, and arriving early also gives you greater flexibility when reserving your ferry tickets.
Getting to Hydra from Athens
Hydra lies approximately 64 kilometres south-west of Athens. The island can be reached from Athens by ferry, with the crossing taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the ferry type and sea conditions. Ferries to Hydra generally depart from Piraeus.
