Training without breakfast is a familiar sight at the gym or in the park: before sunrise, someone is out on their running route, pleased that they have not eaten since the previous evening. The expectation is that, without breakfast, the body will immediately tap into its fat stores. However, the scientific evidence is far more complex – and often less encouraging.

Despite these criticisms, exercising without breakfast has a place, provided certain conditions are met. Many people find morning movement without a full meal comfortable: there is no feeling of fullness, it saves time and the body feels lighter.

- experienced exercisers who know their bodies well
- people who feel noticeably more comfortable doing it than exercising with a full stomach

Anyone experiencing dizziness, nausea, blurred or darkening vision, or extreme weakness should stop experimenting with fasted training and begin future sessions with a light source of energy.

Rather than rigidly following a trend, it is worth taking a practical approach. Some useful recommendations are:
- Fasted training can work for short, easy morning runs – no more than 30–45 minutes at a moderate pace.
- Before strength sessions or intense intervals, eat a small portion of carbohydrates, such as a banana or toast.
- Aim for a modest calorie deficit across the day, around 300–500 calories below total energy needs.
- Do not neglect protein intake to preserve muscle, for example quark, yoghurt, eggs or pulses.
- Drink regularly, as dehydration worsens fatigue and performance decline.
