Thousands of glasses wearers clean their lenses with a T-shirt, tissue or kitchen roll. These shortcuts may seem convenient, yet they wear down lens coatings and cause micro-scratches that are initially invisible. An optician recommends a straightforward routine, requiring no cloth or spray, to protect lenses and restore clear vision.

Why your lenses get marked so quickly

Skin residue, dust and cooking droplets build up on the lens surface. Dry rubbing traps these particles between the fabric and the lens. While the motion removes dirt, it effectively polishes the surface in the wrong way. Anti-reflective, hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings can therefore deteriorate prematurely.

Breathing onto lenses before rubbing them with a sleeve makes matters worse. Breath leaves behind moisture and salts, while fabric adds tiny particles collected during the day. The result is greasy streaks and micro-scratches that scatter light. Visual comfort suffers, particularly at night and when using screens.

Even soft kitchen roll contains fibres that are too stiff, so it should be avoided.

The no-cloth, no-product method, step by step

The principle is simple: lukewarm water, clean fingers and no dry rubbing. This routine is sufficient in the vast majority of cases. It protects lens coatings and clears lenses without leaving streaks.

  1. Wash your hands with mild soap, then rinse them thoroughly.
  2. Hold your glasses beneath a gentle stream of lukewarm water. The water carries away loose dust.
  3. Using the pads of your fingers, gently massage both sides of each lens and the bridge. Do not use your nails or apply pressure.
  4. For stubborn grease, place a tiny drop of neutral soap on your fingertips. Create a lather, then rinse for a long time.
  5. Dry without rubbing: shake the glasses gently, then leave them to drain and air-dry on a clean support.

Having the frame adjusted regularly prevents greasy pressure points around the nose.

How lens type and coating affect care

Organic lenses are lighter but scratch more easily than mineral glass lenses. Modern anti-reflective coatings are more resistant, but they still do not tolerate excessive heat or household solvents. A hydrophobic coating helps water droplets run off, but it does not remove the need for rinsing. Photochromic lenses need the same gentle treatment, especially after sun exposure, when their surface temperature rises.

Useful tips for special situations

For sport and dusty conditions, wear a cap or headband to reduce sweat reaching the lenses. In a workshop or when doing DIY, add protective eyewear over your prescription glasses. In winter, when wearing a mask, wash glasses using the lukewarm-water method and then let them air-dry to limit fogging; adjust the mask’s nose clip to direct air downwards.

When travelling, a small empty bottle can be used to carry mild soap. In a hotel, avoid heavily fragranced soaps and window cleaners. In the car, do not clean your glasses while parked in the sun. Heat through the windscreen increases the risk of a plastic frame becoming distorted.
