Imagine a smartwatch that did more than report your step count or the calories you have burnt: it could show how many heartbeats you have "spent" during the day. A recent study suggests that this figure could eventually become another health measure – a "heartbeat budget" which might, in theory, indicate whether you are using too much of your body's most essential resource.
For decades, the notion of a lifetime cap on heartbeats has persisted. It stems from the longstanding myth that the heart is allotted a set number of beats – commonly put at roughly 2.5 billion – and that every additional beat takes you nearer to exhausting that supply.
Fortunately, that claim is now widely regarded as false.
Heartbeat consumption and exercise
Raising your heart rate through exercise does not reduce your lifespan. On the contrary, people who exercise commonly have lower resting heart rates and tend to live longer. Yet the new study, published in JACC: Advances, uses the same metaphor in a contemporary, data-led context.
The researchers examined fitness-app information from elite athletes, comparing their resting heart rates with their overall daily heartbeat totals. Their calculations suggested that endurance-trained athletes "save" approximately 11,500 heartbeats daily relative to untrained adults because their resting heart rates are lower.
Those savings are not permanent, however. Based on the researchers' estimates, one stage of the Tour de France can require around 35,000 additional beats from a rider, demonstrating how intensely the heart works during competition.
Researchers describe this trade-off – conserving beats while at rest and using them during physical effort – as heartbeat consumption. The principle is straightforward: your daily total reflects how the heart reacts to everything from sleep and stress to sport. As fitness trackers continuously record heart rate already, adding up those beats to create a new health measurement would not require much.
Whether it has genuine meaning is less clear. The study authors acknowledge that their analysis was small and observational. Rather than following participants' health outcomes, they examined only the patterns in their heart-rate records. A high number of daily heartbeats may show that a person is active, but it may also be caused by anxiety, low fitness, caffeine or heat. On its own, the figure reveals little without context.
Even so, the concept is intuitively appealing. Heart rate offers one of the most direct views of how the body is managing life's pressures. A consistently raised resting heart rate has been associated with a greater risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death.
The variation in timing from one beat to the next – called heart rate variability – is also an established sign of stress and emotional wellbeing. Viewing health through "beat consumption" may help people picture the relationship between physical demands and mental strain.
Athletes already understand the importance of this equilibrium. Excessive training, performed too frequently, may raise resting heart rate, lower heart rate variability and impair performance – all classic indicators of overtraining.
Gentler sessions, often known as active recovery, keep the heart rate low and are known to accelerate recovery, enhance overall performance and support a stable mood. If a "heartbeat budget" enables people to recognise when their heart is being overworked, it could prompt them to choose easier activity days before burnout develops.
What the data doesn't tell us
The concept may also matter for people with chronic health conditions. Certain health apps already rely on heart-rate limits to help users prevent overexertion, particularly where fatigue or strain on the heart can make recovery more difficult. In this context, monitoring heartbeat consumption could function as a safety warning rather than a contest, helping someone recognise when their body needs to slow down.
However, as with many promising ideas in exercise science, caution is necessary. The JACC authors concede that their fitness-tracker data came from a small group of highly trained runners and cyclists. This represents only a limited section of the population.
They also did not assess blood pressure, oxygen levels or biomarkers of recovery, despite all being relevant to heart health. Applying these findings as guidance for typical smartwatch users will require larger studies conducted over longer periods.
Is a heartbeat budget a useful idea?
There is also a philosophical issue to consider: should heartbeats really be viewed as a limited resource? While exercise "spends" heartbeats in the immediate term, it can often "earn" more years of life over time.
The heart of a distance runner may beat more often on any given day, yet fewer times over an entire lifetime, since endurance training decreases resting heart rate and makes the heart work more efficiently. From that perspective, using the heart is not the issue; failing to use it could be.
For the moment, heartbeat consumption is still a metaphor looking for significance. Nevertheless, it is an evocative one. Whether a fitness tracker or smartwatch ever begins tallying total beats, its underlying message is straightforward: notice how your heart behaves throughout the day. The aim is not to save beats, but to spend them wisely.
