Your Kythnos Yoga Retreat itinerary: 16th–20th May 2019
As promised, here is the itinerary for the Kythnos Yoga Retreat, taking place from 16th to 20th May 2019.
Catherine and I have created what we believe is the ideal itinerary. Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced Yogi, every class has been planned for you to enjoy. Thanks to the trial and error of previous retreats, we have learnt exactly how to strike the balance between structure and playfulness!
We cannot wait to welcome you to the hidden-gem island of Kythnos!
16th May
Depart from Athens (port and time to be confirmed).
Arrive in Kythnos by ferry.
Transfer from the port to Porto Klaras.
Check in and settle in.
Evening practice – an opening ceremony, followed by Yin & Yoga nidra practice.
Dinner at a local taverna of your choice.
17th May
Grounding Vinyasa practice: returning to the fundamentals. This energising morning session will awaken your senses and help your body recover after travelling. It will also refine your technique and alignment in the key asanas (physical postures) used in a typical Vinyasa-based Suyra Namaskar (sun salutation).
Breakfast served at a local taverna within walking distance of the hotel.
Hike for anyone who would like to take part: Loutra – Apokrousi – Kolonna Beach.
We will pause for lunch in Apokrousi. Anyone wishing to continue onwards to Kolonna Beach can do so afterwards.
The walk takes at least 2hrs and covers a substantial part of the island, from Loutra down to Apokrousi beach, with the option to continue to the beautiful beach of Kolonna. Apokrousi beach is regarded as the second-best beach in Kythnos. There are a couple of tavernas as well as a popular beach bar.
We recommend walking the additional distance to visit Kolonna. Kolonna is the island’s best-known beach: an unspoilt double bay divided by a narrow strip of sand. Picture a peninsula stretching towards an offshore islet. Please note that there is very little shade on this beach.
Evening practice – Gentle Yin and Yoga nidra practice.
Dinner at a local taverna of your choice.
18th May
Arm balance and inversion workshop: a retreat offers additional time to explore postures that can often feel demanding or intimidating. We will develop upper-body and core-strength techniques, which are frequently overlooked when working on arm balances and inversions.
This session is intended to be playful, while safely encouraging you beyond your comfort zone. You will learn how to approach these more challenging postures with confidence and self-awareness.
Breakfast served at a local taverna.
Short walk to Shinari beach for those who would like to join and spend the morning there. It is within walking distance and very close to the hotel.
Sightseeing in Chora for lunch and the afternoon. Explore its narrow streets, which date back to the 17th century, and enjoy the spectacular views. The Monastery of Panagia Nikous stands just outside Chora. With remarkable historical and architectural interest, it is well worth visiting.
Evening practice: Visit to the hot springs.
The thermal springs of Loutra have been used since Roman times and are believed to offer healing benefits. They are an easy 500 m walk from the hotel.
Loutra has two springs: the Agioi Anargyroi spring, with saline waters reaching 38°C, and the Kakavos spring, whose iodine-, bromium- and sodium chloride-rich waters can reach 52°C.
Dinner at your leisure.
19th May
Hatha Class – Ha translates to the meaning “sun” and tha meaning the “moon.” These refer to the balance between masculine and feminine aspects. Hatha Yoga is a path towards balance in the mind, body and spirit. Most styles of Yoga originate from Hatha. This traditional Hatha Yoga class will open with a short meditation, continue with physical practice and finish with Pranayama (breathing techniques).
Breakfast at a local taverna.
This is your day to enjoy activities of your choice or revisit favourite beaches, hot springs or the local town. If you would like to hire a car on the island, this is an ideal day to do so.
Evening practice: a Yin session with reflections on the retreat and Yoga Nidra.
Dinner at a local taverna.
20th May
Closing ceremony and practice.
Breakfast served at a local taverna.
Check-out.
Transfer from the hotel back to the port.
Depart from the port for the return journey to Athens (ferry time and Athens port to be confirmed).
