Four-Part 50hr Modules

Throughout 2021, I will be offering a 200hr TTC programme delivered in 50hr modules.

Every module includes written assignments and, where relevant, micro-lessons or short practical teaching demonstrations.

Guest lecturers may include physiotherapists, voice coaches and international teachers joining online for selected practical sessions.

Why choose four-part modules?

  • This format allows you to work at your own pace without feeling overcommitted.
  • The uncertainty around current Covid-19 levels and restrictions will not necessarily affect the practical elements straight away.
  • You can combine different modules to suit your needs.
  • Existing teachers may choose to revisit or explore particular modules in greater depth as refresher options.

Every course is fully accredited by Yoga Alliance International. The TTC is Hatha-based and also introduces the fundamental principles of Vinyasa sequencing.

The first module is due to begin on Tuesday 26 January 2020.

The proposed session time is 4.30 pm–7.00 pm, alongside one Saturday workshop. Running for eight weeks, the course ends on 16 March. This first module will largely be theory-based.

Available online and/or in the studio. The studio is based in Parktown North, Johannesburg. All Covid-19 safety protocols will be followed. Modules 1–3 may be completed in any order; however, you must have completed at least 150hr of TTC before undertaking the fourth and final module.

Module 1

Yoga theory, history and philosophy, alongside Yoga Nidra and meditation. Additional subjects include:

  • Various Yoga styles and their relevance
  • Exploring ancient Yoga texts
  • Why Yoga should not be mistaken for a religion
  • Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras
  • Yoga as a way of life
  • Misunderstandings surrounding Yoga
  • Yoga Nidra practice
  • An introduction to meditation
  • Traditional Yoga and its evolution

Assessments include a book review and a practical teaching assessment of Yoga Nidra.

Module 2

This follow-on module places greater emphasis on practical teaching and is also delivered over eight weeks.

  • Pawanamuktasana and the Asanas, with a substantial practical element
  • The skill of sequencing
  • Pranayama – breathing techniques
  • An introduction to Sanskrit
  • An introduction to Ayurvedic principles

Assessments include a written paper on a topic of your choice within Ayurvedic practice, plus teaching a micro-lesson on pranayama and the Pawanamuktasana series.

Module 3

This module is especially important to me. While most Yoga teacher-training courses provide only 20hrs of Applied Anatomy, this course includes 30hrs, as well as an understanding and exploration of where the subtle bodies overlap. It follows another eight-week timetable and includes one Saturday workshop.

Parts of the module will be delivered through live online/in-studio lectures, combined with pre-recorded workshops.

  • Anatomy of the physical and subtle bodies
  • A strong theoretical focus on the skeletal system, muscular system, breathing mechanics and joints in detail
  • An introduction to the Chakra systems
  • The Pancha Kosha model
  • The Prana bodies
  • An introduction to Mudras
  • Integrating the two systems
  • The spinal column, brain and nervous system
  • Preventing and understanding common injuries

Each anatomy module will include tests. You will need to submit a written assignment on either the chakra system, Prana bodies or Pancha Kosha model. We will also undertake a practical assessment involving teaching selected poses using modified variations.

Module 4

In this final module, all course content will be brought together. Lectures will concentrate on substantial practical work and theoretical revision, including Yoga for specific populations and/or contraindications. The module also covers finding your individual teacher’s voice and preferred teaching style.

You will be required to teach a 60-minute Hatha class based on a theme of your choice.

The fee for each module is R 5200, with a 10% discount available for continued modules.

Additional/alternative modules available during the year:

  • 50hr Chakra course
  • 100hr Yin Teacher Training course
