A seven-day meditation retreat might reasonably be expected to leave people feeling calmer and restored.
After all, it involves guided meditation sessions, healing rituals, and classes exploring how to reach transcendental states. It certainly sounds more appealing than taking the bus to work.
Yet such activities may be more transformative than previously thought.
Taken together, scientists say, they seem to exert a remarkably substantial and profound influence on both mind and body.
A 2025 study published in Communications Biology linked attendance at a seven-day meditation retreat with a form of neural reprogramming among participants, potentially producing health-positive changes.
"This isn't about just stress relief or relaxation," said biomedical researcher Hemal Patel from UC San Diego.
"This is about fundamentally changing how the brain engages with reality and quantifying these changes biologically."
Although the results cannot establish cause and effect - the research was a small observational study - they indicate that meditation and associated practices may have broader, more potent effects than we had realised.
The seven-day meditation retreat study
Patel and colleagues examined 20 healthy adults selected at random from more than 500 people attending a meditation and health retreat in San Diego.
Across the seven-day retreat, attendees went to daily talks focused on the body's capacity for self-healing, the mind's ability to shape reality, and the healing potential of present-centred awareness and mystical-type experiences.
They also participated in guided meditation sessions that used conscious-breathing methods, as well as group healing rituals. During these, 'healers' meditated while directing their attention towards a member of the group.
Among the study's 20 participants - 14 female and 6 male, with an average age of roughly 46 - 11 were advanced meditators, having at least six months of experience with the techniques. The remaining 9 were beginners.

As well as taking part in the retreat activities described above, participants completed several assessments before and after the event.
These included functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans, blood-plasma tests, and a questionnaire intended to assess people's mystical states and feelings. This was done without psychedelic drugs, which none of the participants consumed.
Participants displayed substantial changes across several tests after completing the meditation retreat.
It is not possible to say that the meditation activities produced those changes - the study had no control group for comparison, for instance, and its data are entirely observational - but the researchers' findings are nonetheless notable.
Brain and blood changes after meditation
The fMRI results indicated lower brain activity after meditation in the default mode network, which is linked to self-referential, inwardly focused thinking. Activity also decreased in the salience network, which assists in detecting stimuli both within and outside the body.
According to the researchers, meditation seemed to lessen the brain's segmented activity, prompting a whole-brain functional state in which information moved more efficiently.
To investigate whether retreat activities might influence participants' neuroplasticity, the team applied blood plasma collected after meditation to neurons in a dish. The cells developed significantly longer neurites - branching extensions of the cell - than cells treated with plasma taken before the retreat.
Other blood-based markers included a move towards glycolytic metabolism, evidence of immune modulation, and higher levels of endogenous opioids, the body's naturally produced pain-relieving chemicals.
Responses after the retreat on the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ–30) revealed significantly higher participant scores, rising from 2.37 to 3.02. The researchers say this is comparable with outcomes observed following psychedelic use.
"We're seeing the same mystical experiences and neural connectivity patterns that typically require psilocybin, now achieved through meditation practice alone," said Patel.
"Seeing both central nervous system changes in brain scans and systemic changes in blood chemistry underscores that these mind-body practices are acting on a whole-body scale."
One point worth noting is that study co-author Joe Dispenza is chief executive of Encephalon, the company that runs the meditation retreats described in the study and sells access to other meditation and healing material.
There are further limitations: this was a small study and one unable to demonstrate causation. The researchers acknowledge this and call for future work using more rigorous, controlled designs to establish whether, and how, meditation could be bringing about these changes.

Still, the results need careful interpretation, but they are far from the first evidence suggesting meditation can produce powerful effects.
One recent study found evidence that meditation can reshape brain activity. Other research indicates that meditation may ease pain or lessen the impact of stress and ageing.
We still do not really know the full extent of these effects.
But understanding is drawing nearer.
"We've known for years that practices like meditation can influence health," Patel said.
"But what's striking is that combining multiple mind-body practices into a single retreat produced changes across so many biological systems that we could measure directly in the brain and blood."
The findings appear in Communications Biology.
